Welcome to CleanAir 2023
Welcome to the official website of the 15th International Conference on Combustion Technologies for a Clean Environment. The Conference will be held at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal, from June 25 to 29, 2023.
The conference will address topics such as reaction kinetics, pollutant formation and control, combustion diagnostics, computational methods, turbulent combustion, heterogeneous combustion, stationary combustion systems and environmental impact, engine, gas turbine and spray combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, CO2 capture processes, new combustion concepts, and fire research.
Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. It is built in 7 hills and although it has more than 20 centuries of History, is ageless. Beautiful and unexpected colorful views are found at every turn down and it is surrounded by Tagus river and a beautiful coastline.

Professor Mário Costa passed away on the 3rd of June 2020.
As a tribute to his memory and acknowledging his contributions to the scientific and academic communities, we decided to organize the 15th International Conference on Combustion Technologies for a Clean Environment.

On the importance of soot emission inventory and characterization for radiative forcing assessment and air quality monitoring
Pascale Desgroux
CNRS, PC2A, University of Lille, Lille, France
Pascale Desgroux is a CNRS research director at the University of Lille. She received her doctoral diploma at the University of Rouen in 1988. She has a solid expertise in laser diagnostics (laser-induced fluorescence, cavity ring-down spectroscopy, laser-induced incandescence) and spectroscopy for detecting minor species and soot particles in flames. She participates to the development of chemical mechanisms of pollutant formation in flames particularly for the prompt-NO formation and the nucleation of soot particles. She was involved in several European projects related with the measurement of soot particles and she coordinated French research programs related with NO and soot formation in flames. She has served on the editorial board of Progress in Energy and Combustion Science. She is associate editor of The Proceedings of the Combustion Institute. She served the Combustion Institute as colloquium co-chair and as member of the Board of the Combustion Institute.

Ammonia/hydrogen combustion in internal combustion engines: recent progress in experiments and CFD simulations
Xue-Song Bai

Xue-Song Bai joined the Department of Energy Sciences of Lund University in April 1995 where he heads a research group in the Division of Fluid Mechanics focusing on Reactive Fluid Dynamics. Prof. Bai received his Ph.D. degree in Fluid Mechanics from Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden in 1994, and since 2002 he is a professor in the Division of Fluid Mechanics, Department of Energy Sciences of Lund University. Prof. Bai’s research interests include theory of flame propagation and extinction, mechanisms of pollutant formation in chemically reactive flows, modelling of turbulence/chemistry interaction, direct numerical simulation and large eddy simulation of turbulent reactive flows, modelling of solid/gas and liquid/gas turbulent two-phase reactive flows, with application to different energy conversion processes in internal combustion engines, gas turbines, and industrial furnaces.

Feyza Kazanç
Middle East Technical University, Clean Combustion Technologies Laboratory, Ankara, Turkey
Feyza Kazanç is currently an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU) located in Ankara, Turkey. Dr. Kazanç obtained her B.S. degree from METU in 2009. She completed her Ph.D. at Northeastern University, Boston in 2013. She joined METU Mechanical Engineering in 2014, where she established the Clean Combustion Technologies Laboratory. Her research focuses on thermal conversion processes of various solid fuels including biomass, plastic/bioplastic waste, and low rank coals. She is the co-author of 23 journal articles with an h index of 10.
Simulating turbulent flames and pollutant emissions

Luc Vervisch
National Institute for Applied Sciences (INSA), Rouen Normandy & CNRS Coria, Rouen, France
Luc Vervisch completed his PhD at Laboratoire National d’Hydraulique (LNH) in Chatou (Paris, France) in 1991, followed by a Post-Doc at Center for Turbulence Research (CTR) Stanford, USA. He is professor at the National Institute for Applied Sciences (INSA) in Rouen Normandie, France. His research focusses on numerical simulation of turbulent reacting flows, combustion and flames. He has developed physical modeling used in software specialized in virtual prototyping of environmentally friendly systems for energy production, transportation and transformation industries. He was awarded a senior Chair at Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) in 2014 and the Prix Jaffé of the French Academy of Sciences in 2015. He is fellow of the Combustion Institute and President of the scientific council of IFP Energies Nouvelles.

Epaminondas Mastorakos
Engineering Department, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England
Epaminondas Mastorakos is the Hopkinson/ICI Professor of Applied Thermodynamics at the Engineering Department, University of Cambridge. He has experience with fuels, energy, combustion, atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, the fluid mechanics of shale oil and gas, forest fires, and energy systems for aviation and shipping. His lab has received funding from industry, the EU, Singapore’s NRF and UK’s EPSRC on a range of topics, with significant activity on gas turbine and diesel engines combustion, turbulent combustion, and aviation and shipping decarbonisation. He is currently the Combustion Research Coordinator in the Rolls-Royce / Cambridge University Gas Turbine Partnership. His papers have received numerous prizes from the Combustion Institute and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and he has been elected Fellow of the Combustion Institute (2018), Fellow of the UK Institute of Mechanical Engineers (2019), and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2022).

Edgar C. Fernandes

Edgar C. Fernandes is an assistant professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Instituto Superior Técnico-Universidade de Lisboa. He holds a PhD on Thermoacoustic Instabilities and current activities goes from teaching activities of Thermodynamics, Experimental Methods, Waste to energy Valorization, Humanitarian Engineering and Alternative Fuels to coordination of the Master in Energy, Engineering and Management (MEGE), Director of the Laboratory of Thermofluids and Combustion Systems from the Center IN+ and being a Scientific Coordinator and member of Administrative Board of HyLab (Collaborative Lab for Hydrogen). Currently the scientific area of interest and research are focused on the study and development of H2 value-chain, combustion of blended fuels, including H2 and biogas, focusing on thermoacoustic instabilities, flame-wall interaction (thermoelectric devices), flame stabilization techniques and flame spectroscopy. In addition, research also focus on developing diagnostics to sense and quantify blended fuels like methane+H2, to characterize flames (chemiluminescence) and to detect H2 based on flame synthesized CarbonNanoTubes to develop H2 sensors.

Extended abstract/Paper should be prepared according the to the Template and submitted using the link bellow.
Presentation Guidelines
Oral presentations
The time allocated for the presentations is 60 minutes for the invited lectures and 25 minutes for oral presentations, including the time for discussion. Laptops connected to LCD projectors are available in all rooms. Speakers should bring their presentations on a USB flash drive in Microsoft PowerPoint format (*.ppt, *.pptx) or Adobe PDF format. The presentations must be delivered to the local staff and copied to the laptop of the room allocated to the presentation. First day presenters should deliver their presentations during the morning coffee break on Monday, June 26th. All the other presenters should do the same by the end of the previous session, even if the scheduled session is on the following day. Speakers may also connect their laptops directly to the projectors, but we cannot guarantee compatibility.
Poster presentations
Posters must have A0 format (841 mm x 1189 mm, upright format - vertical). They must be placed in the poster panels during the coffee break before the poster session (Wednesday, 28th June, at 11:15-11:35). The organisation will provide pushpins to attach your poster on the poster panels. We kindly ask you to use them and not any other kind of material as they might cause damage to the panels.
Special Issue
A number of extended abstracts/papers presented at the Clean Air 2023 conference will be selected for recommendation for submission in a special issue of the journal FUEL. Upon submission, the reviewing process will follow the normal procedure.
